Charlton Athletic defender’s absence from Wycombe Wanderers match explained
Charlton Athletic defender Mandela Egbo is set to be available for Saturday’s home game against Shrewsbury Town.
The former Crystal Palace full-back was not part of the matchday 18 for last weekend’s 1-1 draw with Wycombe.
Egbo, signed on a free transfer last summer after his Swindon Town deal expired, had a lengthy spell on the sidelines with a quad injury.
But the 25-year-old, who has been limited to 10 appearances this season after also injuring his knee in pre-season, had ended more than four months out when he came on as a late substitute in the 4-1 win at Morecambe.
Charlton boss Dean Holden told the South London Press: “He came on at Morecambe, he then came out of the squad at Cambridge because we put Sess on the bench instead, because he can cover both positions. We were quite light, with Terell (Thomas) playing.
“Last Friday before the Wycombe game, he just felt something. Just as I was going out for the warm up he came in and said he just felt something.
“We assessed it over the weekend, it was probably just a little bit of fatigue. It was nothing at all. He’s trained this week and is absolutely fine.
“If you come out of training on the Friday then you can’t put him in the matchday squad.
“I think maybe it was a bit over-cautious. He has been out a long time, he felt something and thought ‘oh no’. He rested and recovered over the weekend. He’s all good.”
