Charlton Athletic FC ‘gives Covid the red card’ with free match tickets and pitch-side selfies for fans getting the jab

Charlton Athletic Football Club are offering fans a chance to ‘give Covid-19 the red card’ at a special vaccination event.

The first 1,000 people to get vaccinated this Saturday (June 19) will receive a free ticket to a Charlton Athletic football game, with more prizes on the day.

All attendees will be able to take a selfie pitch-side and get a view of the Valley normally only experienced by professional footballers.

The government has announced that the planned removal of all Covid-19 related restrictions has been postponed, to allow more time for millions of people to vaccinated.

The Royal Borough of Greenwich, Charlton Athletic FC , South East London Clinical Commissioning Group and Greenwich Health GP Federation have teamed up to arrange this mass-vaccination event to help get as many people protected as possible.

Cllr Danny Thorpe, London Councils Executive member for Health and Care and Leader of the Royal Borough of Greenwich, said: “As the government has announced that restrictions will be extended due to increasing infections, we need everyone to get vaccinated to beat this disease and get back to doing the things we love.

“Getting vaccinated pitch-side at a famous football stadium will be a unique and memorable experience so please take advantage of this offer.

“It’s not too late to get vaccinated. We need you to help make sure this lockdown is the last.

“Boroughs across London are leading similar local initiatives in a bid to get as many people vaccinated as possible and ensure a return to the freedoms we all miss.”

Wayne Mumford, Charlton Athletic’s Commercial Director, said: “Charlton has a long history of excellent work in the local community and we’re pleased to be joining forces with the Royal Borough of Greenwich council and South East London Clinical Commissioning Group on this important activity as we all work towards a return to some sort of normality.

“As well as offering a free ticket to the first 1,000 vaccinated on Saturday, we’ll have plenty going on at The Valley.

“Anyone attending will able to go pitchside, take part in a variety of competitions and enjoy a full programme of content on our big screen.”

Dr Krishna Subbarayan, GP and Governing Body Member NHS South East London Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “Getting vaccinated is the best way to keep people safe and to help us all return to our normal lives.

“If you haven’t had your first dose and are over 40 come along to this great event on Saturday.”

The AstraZeneca vaccine will be on offer so anyone age 40 and above can just walk-in with no booking to receive a vaccination.

If you are under 40 you can still have the AstraZeneca vaccine but will just need a clinical assessment first.

Anyone who has already booked a vaccination appointment are being urged to continue with it.

But if they wish to make use of the Valley offer, have been asked to cancel their appointment.
