Charlton Athletic manager still seeking transfer window tweaks ahead of deadline and excited by Kaheim Dixon potential

Nathan Jones has talked again about the need for Charlton Athletic to make more moves to improve his playing squad before the transfer deadline at the end of next week.

The Addicks snapped up Jamaican winger Kaheim Dixon on Friday.

And Jones is still looking to strengthen and from a position of strength with Charlton winning their opening three League One matches and without conceding a goal.

Greg Docherty and Matty Godden, two of the summer window recruitments, scored in today’s 2-0 victory over Bolton Wanderers.

“It’s a squad game,” said Jones. “We will rotate and we want to get a squad that is competitive so when we want to replace someone we can put someone in that is equally as good. That is the art of recruitment and building a squad. Sometimes that takes a bit of time.

“The owners and board have backed me to almost do that. We’ve still got five or six days of the window to keep going and doing that.

“I’m expecting not too busy tonight and then we can go from that tomorrow. Look, we know what we want to do – it’s just about agreeing everything.

“It’s not just about the start. The start backs up what we want to try and do but you can’t just rely on results. You have to have an end goal and a belief and structure to the process to do that. Along the way you are going to have ups and downs but you can’t then kneejerk (and go) ‘we’ve just lost a game so you can’t do this now’.

“There has to be process – a structured and quality process. They (the club’s hierarchy) have been brilliant.”

Dixon, 19, has signed a four-year contract and joins from Arnett Gardens.

“He’ll need to get up to speed physically – not technically,”said Jones. “He is a wonderful player technically. He has something really different. He is a good athlete but, with the greatest respect where he has come from, and the training regime he will have had – including the sports science – he needs to develop a little bit more.

“But we’ll see him soon. We’ve got to make sure we are careful with him and then we can see what he is all about.”
