Charlton Athletic midfielder makes loan switch to Cambridge United

Charlton midfielder Conor McGrandles has joined Cambridge United on loan.

The 27-year-old signed for the Addicks at the start of July but has had a number of injuries which have hampered his settling in process.

McGrandles has featured 12 times in all competitions for the South London club with the last of those coming in the FA Cup win over non-league Coalville Town in early November.

He has not made the Charlton bench in the league since the end of October.

McGrandles was recovering from a knee ligament injury sustained towards the end of the last campaign at Lincoln City when he made the move to SE7.

He has since broken his hand and also suffered an ankle injury which have also impacted his first-team prospects.

“Through no fault of his own, he’s had some freak injuries this season which he has battled back from,” Holden told the South London Press. “I’ve not seen him play, other than 90 minutes in the U21s. I took over and the midfield boys have been so good that he has been down the pecking order.

“He’s an honest lad and trained well every single day that I’ve seen him. He just wants to play games. It makes sense for the football club. He can go and play 15-20 games for Cambridge, who are in a bit of  a dogfight and then we’ll re-assess him.

“I spoke to Conor and told him that we’ll keep an eye on him.”
