Charlton Athletic selection options for FA Cup tie at Cray Valley depleted by international call ups
Charlton Athletic are set to be depleted for Wednesday night’s FA Cup first round replay at Cray Valley – with a number of their players away on international duty.
Addicks head coach Michael Appleton made 11 changes for last weekend’s tie at The Valley. Lucas Ness’ own goal cancelled out Scott Fraser’s early opener.
Now the South London full-timers head to the Isthmian League South East Division club with the match being screened on BBC.
Ashley Maynard-Brewer and James Abankwah have already been selected by Australia and Republic of Ireland U21s respectively.
And it is expected that Michael Hector and Karoy Anderson will be called up again by Jamaica with Terell Thomas set to be in St Lucia’s squad.
Daniel Kanu, on loan at Southend United, has been selected by Sierra Leone at senior level.
“It is one of the last things I touched on in the dressing room,” said Appleton after today’s 2-2 draw at Portsmouth. “We need to go there on Wednesday and get the job done. That will be our mentality and attitude.
“We’ve got quite a few players missing from the game, which is disappointing. The lads will be ready come Wednesday. I’d like to think we get the job done a little bit better than we did last week.
“I was trying to be really diplomatic on Sunday and not be too hard on the players that played. I was trying not to kill them off but the reality is that they have to be able to deal with those type of situations because what chance am I going to get if I have to put them on in games like today? It’s the harsh realities of football and I think they know that now.
“We’ve got six away, who won’t be available for Wednesday. That makes the task a little more difficult. Having said that, we’ve got more than enough quality in that dressing room to get the job done.”
