Charlton Athletic target Nathan Jones as their new boss

Charlton Athletic are set to appoint Nathan Jones as their new boss.

The former Luton Town and Southampton manager held positive talks with the Addicks hierarchy earlier this week.

And the South London Press understands that the finer details of his contract are being worked on.

Jones was also under serious consideration for the job at another South London club earlier this season – Millwall. The 50-year-old was on the final two-man shortlist for the Den vacancy after Gary Rowett stepped down but they opted to appoint former Chelsea and Everton coach Joe Edwards.

Jones has a connection with the Addicks, joining them in June 2012 as U21 professional development coach, not long after his playing career at Yeovil Town ended.

He had success in that role and 13 months later opted to join Brighton as assistant head coach, working under Oscar Garcia.

Jones then started his own managerial career in January 2016 and led Luton to runners-up spot in League Two in the 2017-18 season.

The Hatters were second in League One when he landed the Stoke City job in January 2019, succeeding the sacked Rowett, but was dismissed 11 months later.

Jones returned to Luton, then a Championship club, and they reached the play-offs in 2021-22, losing to Huddersfield. But the Welshman still won Championship Manager of the Season.

Jones was once again on the move in November 2022 as he took a Premier League job at Southampton but was sacked after just eight top-flight matches and three months.

Curtis Fleming took caretaker charge of Charlton’s 1-1 draw at Blackpool last weekend, assisted by Jason Pearce.

The pair are expected to still be at the helm for Saturday’s home match against Derby County.

American investors Gabriel Brener and Joshua Friedman took a more hands-on approach to the process of bringing in the new man after the short tenures of both Dean Holden and Michael Appleton.
