Charlton Athletic to appeal Jayden Stockley’s dismissal at Burton Albion
Charlton Athletic caretaker boss Johnnie Jackson has confirmed that the club will appeal Jayden Stockley’s red card at Burton Albion.
The striker was sent off early in the first period at The Pirelli Stadium after tangling with Deji Oshilaja as he looked to attack a corner. Burton captain Oshilaja, formerly on the books of the Addicks, was also dismissed by referee Trevor Kettle.
“We’re appealing it,” Jackson told the South London Press. “It’s like I said to the press afterwards – it is probably a yellow card, at worst.
“There is a bit of grappling. If he has been sent off for violent conduct then I don’t see any violence there – no-one is throwing a punch or elbow. I don’t think either of them deserve to miss three games for that.
“Initially it is also a penalty. Deji has grabbed hold of him and is not looking at the ball. That started the grappling and Jayden is trying to get loose. No-one lets go and they then end up on the floor. You get the situation where both don’t want to let the other one up first.
“For either player to miss three matches for that is not right.”
I did not attend the game, but when watching the highlights on Quest, I must admit, although it was not easy to see, I felt that Oshilaja must have grabbed Stockley first because Stockley would be attacking the ball, so he must have been held back. Penalty !! There appeared to be no fists or kicks, just a grapple on the floor as they tried to get up. But, of course, Mr Kettle has a reputation to live up to and sent them both off. Two yellow cards would have been sufficient, or a penalty and 0ne yellow card !!
Glad to see Charlton are appealing against it though. I wish them the best of luck, we will need Jadyn for the very tough game against Plymouth on Saturday.
