Charlton Athletic to make major changes for Colchester tie in EFL Trophy

Charlton Athletic manager Ben Garner is set to make wholesale changes for tonight’s EFL Trophy tie at Colchester United.

The Addicks play their second group match in the competition and are aiming to build on a 3-0 victory over Gillingham.

The likes of Albie Morgan and Corey Blackett-Taylor, who both did not make the squad for Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Oxford, look likely to get some minutes.

Aaron Henry (knee) will miss out and the match also comes too soon for striker Chuks Aneke, who has not featured since picking up a calf injury in pre-season.

Jake Forster-Caskey is almost certain to feature.

Garner, speaking straight after the Oxford match, said: “I don’t see anyone who started today playing. But there are players that need games and opportunities to play.

“In every competition we want to go and win the game – that will be the case on Tuesday and at Lincoln on Saturday.”

Colchester recently appointed Matt Bloomfield as their new head coach.

He left his coaching role at Wycombe on Friday and started with a 2-1 defeat at AFC Wimbledon.

Charlton assistant coach Scott Marshall said: “It will be a good opportunity for guys to get some minutes.

“With them having a new head coach there is a little bit of unknown there in terms of their style.

“I wouldn’t call it experimenting [with Charlton set to mix up their selection], there might be some changes. We’ll do what’s right for the squad and guys who need some minutes. It will be a case of having one eye on the weekend.”
