Charlton Athletic trio won’t be involved at Cheltenham – as their Addicks careers are ended ahead of final day

Charlton Athletic trio Macauley Bonne, Gavin Kilkenny and Matt Penney were not required to attend training today – with all of them not selected to be in the matchday squad for Sunday’s League One finale at Cheltenham Town.

The trio have all struggled to make an impact for the Addicks.

Bonne has not featured in Holden’s selections since he was dropped for disciplinary reasons last month. The former Leyton Orient and QPR striker – an Ipswich Town fans – liked a couple of posts after Charlton’s 6-0 drubbing at Portman Road, a match that he featured in.

Bonne was signed on a permanent basis in the January window after his QPR contract was ripped up but he will become a free agent this summer.

Irish midfielder Kilkenny joined on loan from AFC Bournemouth but the 23-year-old has featured just eight times, two of those as a substitute.

Left-back Penney will return to parent club Ipswich Town. He has not been in the last 12 matchday squads and played 289 minutes of football for the Addicks.

Holden is set to bring Ryan Inniss back into his squad after the former Palace defender served his suspension. And some of the club’s youngsters are also likely to be involved.

“All the players, particularly the loan ones who came in January, we thank them for their efforts,” Holden told the South London Press. “These three guys, in particular, it hasn’t worked out as well as we would have liked or as much as they’d have liked.

“They’ve not had as much game time as they would like, when they first came in. There are different reasons for that. We wish them well. It’s part of the game. Some players do need rhythm, to get up to their best performances, and it wasn’t something they were able to get.

“They have been good professionals behind the scenes at the training ground and played their part in us getting up to 10th in the league.”
