Charlton Athletic’s Conor Washington: We deserved the win after slog against Fleetwood Town

They had to work for it, but Conor Washington felt Charlton Athletic were worthy of the victory after a 3-2 triumph over Fleetwood Town.

Ben Purrington headed the Addicks into an early led, before Washington bagged his first of the night just beyond the half-hour mark.

But the hosts, who hadn’t conceded a goal in over nine and a half hours of football, were shell-shocked as Ched Evans scored a quickfire brace to level the scores before the break.

The victory was secured though as Albie Morgan was tripped in the penalty area shortly after the restart with Washington stepping up to convert from the spot and notch his second of the game and fifth of the season in the process.

Washington said: “It was a slog to be honest. It didn’t feel like a 3-2 game. We probably had the better of it. They had a lot of possession but I think we managed the game well and probably deserved the three points on the basis of everything.

“We worked so hard to get the lead and it’s very unlike us to concede one, never mind two. But they’ve got good players, they’re a really good side. The manager said after the game that they’re going to be right up there. They were last year and they will be again. Look at the team they’ve put out there tonight, it’s as good as most of the league, if not better.

“That’s a very good side for this level and they are going to create chances. Fair play to Ched Evans, he’s taken two half-chances.”

Northern Irish international Washington linked up well with fellow frontman Omar Bogle during the victory – his fellow striker involved heavily in his first goal as Bogle’s powerful run and shot led to Washington gobbling up the rebound.

“He’s done brilliant for the goal and I thought he was fantastic all night.,” said Washington of his strike partner.

“I was really surprised when we manged to sign a player of that calibre at this level. He’s a Championship striker, as I think all four of us would like to think we are to be honest. It’s a great strike force and Bogle is getting fitter and fitter every game. You can see that he’s getting sharper. I just think there’s going to be a glut of goals for him just around the corner.”
