Charlton boss Lee Bowyer frustrated as Addicks drop points late on once more

BY LOUIS MENDEZ

Charlton boss Lee Bowyer was left bitterly frustrated as they once again dropped points in the closing stages on the road.

Swindon Town’s Brett Pitman headed a 90th-minute leveller to rescue a point for the struggling Robins, after Charlton looked set to gain all three thanks to Chuks Aneke’s seventh strike of the season.

Diallang Jaiyesimi had given the hosts a first-half lead, but Omar Bogle pegged them back shortly before the interval.

The South Londoners also dropped two points late on away at Shrewsbury a fortnight ago after giving away an added-time penalty.

Bowyer said: “Hugely disappointed. There’s no way we should be leaving here with one point after the chances we created. Second-half, we should have scored three, four goals. Our decision making has cost us today. Wrong decisions at the wrong times. Passing when we should be shooting, shooting when we should be passing.

“There was one time when we had a break and it was six v two or three in our favour, there’s no way we should let them off like that. We just weren’t clinical in front of goal and if you don’t take your chances, then that can always happen. From nothing, we were comfortable and we just have to see it out. Again, we’ve dropped another two points.

“We were the better side by far, second-half. We created loads of chances and didn’t take them. They had no chances but from a set-piece they flick it on and it loops over Ben [Amos]. That’s the game, unfortunately. Our general play was good. We kept doing the right things, moving the ball well at times, difficult pitch, difficult conditions. It showed that everything we’d worked on was working. It was just that final bit and that’s the most important bit. That’s what has cost us.

“The most important thing when you come to places like this is to leave with three points. Sometimes it’s going to be pretty, sometimes it ain’t. Today, there was some good stuff that we did and at times it was a bit of a battle. The most disappointing thing is that we’ve left with one point instead of three because we should have won that game comfortably.

“Everyone is going to drop points but this and Shrewsbury now, that’s four points we’ve dropped that it shouldn’t be happening. My job is to keep pushing them and try to get the best out of them. We played well. But the most important thing is the three points and we’re only coming back with one.”

  • Two things from this, 1. no disrespect to our defence, but it is no coincidence since both Akinfawa and Innis have been missing, Charlton are leaking more goals. 2, Boy oh boy, do we need a striker who can finish the chances created, will Schwartz be the answer, assuming he signs next month?.
It is a shame as with those extra 4pts Charlton would be in 2nd place with a couple of games in hand,
