Charlton forward Chuks Aneke hopes to increase his output after notching winner at Blackpool
BY LOUIS MENDEZ
His strike in Tuesday’s 1-0 win at Blackpool was just Chuks Aneke’s third during his injury-riddled Charlton career – but the forward hopes he can now kick on and repay the faith boss Lee Bowyer has shown in him.
The former Milton Keynes man missed long spells of last season with a knock and also suffered a further setback after contracting Covid-19 in the early stages of this campaign.
Bowyer said recently that the 27-year-old would be playing at a higher level than League One if he had a better fitness record and his performances during his last few Addicks outings certainly suggest that is the case.
He came off the bench to head home the winner at Bloomfield Road on Tuesday evening and hopes he will continue to be involved in Charlton goals going forward.
Aneke said: “I haven’t really scored as much and assisted as much as I want to. I’ve done some good things but it’s been up and down. I really want to focus on getting some goals and some assists.
“I enjoy [working under Bowyer]. It’s a challenge, he’s very demanding. Since I’ve been here he’s been wanting me to have more of a striker’s mentality, a striker’s instinct. I think he’ll be pleased with the one I’ve got today.
“I’m Covid-free now thankfully. I just want to get a run in the team. I’ve had my injury problems since I’ve been here. I know what I can do in this team. I want to score some goals. I want to increase my output since I’ve been here. Assists and goals.
“It was a great cross. Alfie [Doughty] has just put it back in tot the six-yard box and I’ve just headed it in. I’m delighted with that.
“I’m delighted. I just want to help the team. I came on. I’m delighted to get the goal and help the team get three points to carry on the run we’re on at the moment.
“I don’t tend to set a goal target, I just want to be as dangerous as possible. I like to assist and I like to score goals but I have no target. Just as many as I can to help the team.
“When you win games, that’s the aim of the game really. Back to back wins now so everyone is positive. The games come thick and fast. We’ve got one Saturday and another one Tuesday so we’ve got to stay humble. Keep our heads down and we’ll go again.
“We want to win every game we play. The good thing is that we have a good group of lads that want to win and better their careers. If we can get everyone fit and on the pitch and get everyone raring to go I think we’ll interesting.”
