Charlton have “very healthy” sell-on in January transfer deal

Charlton owner Thomas Sandgaard has described the sell-on in Alfie Doughty’s move to Stoke City as “very healthy”.

The 21-year-old move to the Championship side for an undisclosed fee at the end of the January transfer window.

If Doughty had opted to run down his Valley deal and moved cross border in the summer as a free agent then the Addicks would not have received a sell-on and the compensation would only have been around £325,000.

He is out with a torn hamstring and has not played since the end of October.

“We got a really good deal – a decent fee for him and a very healthy sell on,” Sandgaard told the South London Press. “That is deserved. We spent a lot of time and energy on developing a player like him.

“That was a difficult set-up – contractually where we were at. A potential renewal of the contract should have been conducted much earlier, before I got into it.

“We ended up getting a very attractive financial deal, even though he is still injured. Stoke have taken a chance on him. He’s got huge potential and we’ll have a nice sell-on if he is eventually sold for even more money.”
