Conor Washington stays on penalty duty for Charlton Athletic – as boss Lee Bowyer has praise for role being played by Omar Bogle

Conor Washington will stay on penalty duties for Charlton Athletic despite failing to convert in Saturday’s draw at Gillingham.

Keeper Jack Bonham saved the Northern Ireland international’s attempt.

Omar Bogle had wanted to take the spot-kick after being fouled by Ryan Jackson, but assistant manager Johnnie Jackson told him to hand the ball over to his strike partner.

“Conor will stay on penalties,” Addicks boss Lee Bowyer told the South London Press. “He didn’t do anything wrong. It was a good penalty.

“He’s hit it well and tried to do the right thing. He got power but it’s a great save, to get down that low in the corner. It’s a very, very good save.”

Bogle was also keen to take Charlton’s previous penalty which was converted by Washington against Fleetwood Town.

Bowyer was quick to praise the former Cardiff and Grimsby frontman for his contribution.

“He [Bogle] didn’t put Conor off. It was another two minutes after that when he took the penalty.

“I understand why Omar wanted it – he wants to score a goal. He’s desperate to score for us. It just ain’t happening for him – nothing is dropping for him.

“I just said to him: ‘Keep working hard, something will drop – you will score goals. Don’t worry about it’. He got fouled and he wanted to take it, but Conor is our penalty taker.

“Omar is one of those strikers whose work for the team goes unnoticed. You need someone like that alongside a Conor or Smythy, whoever is up top, who will do that dirty work and occupy one or two defenders – which he does at times.

“I think he’s done really well for us so far.”
