Crystal Palace boss Hodgson would be happy to discuss new deal – but it has not been a priority

By Richard Cawley

Roy Hodgson says he has had no talks over a new contract at Crystal Palace – with the sole focus being on keeping the club in the top-flight.

The Eagles are virtually assured of safety after last weekend’s 5-0 demolition of Leicester City and can climb as high as 10th if they win at Stoke City this weekend.

Hodgson signed a deal until the summer of 2019 when he replaced the hapless Frank de Boer.

The former Fulham and England chief was asked about his contract situation today at the pre-Stoke City press conference. He replied: “I’ve got to be honest, that hasn’t been any one of my priorities. I wouldn’t mind a new deal, but that will be something that has to be looked at.

“I haven’t worked this season, or my staff, with this exceptional group of players and fans to try and particularly improve my position. The focus has been on the club and what it needs and will need going forward to make 100 per cent certain we don’t find ourselves in the same situation – so Steve Parish and the other owners don’t find themselves at Christmas worried about the next coach or manager as they again find themselves in the relegation zone and panic starts to set in; wondering can we survive yet again?”
