Crystal Palace boss Patrick Vieira left frustrated by performance in 2-1 loss to Aston Villa
Patrick Vieira admitted his Crystal Palace side failed to produce enough quality in today’s 2-1 loss to Aston Villa.
The South London club’s seven-game unbeaten run was ended as they lost for the first time since September 18 at Liverpool. This was also a first reverse at Selhurst Park for Patrick Vieira.
The Eagles’ vulnerability to set-pieces was again underlined for Matt Targett’s opener. The flight of Ashley Young’s corner was misjudged by James Tomkins, starting due to an injury to Joachim Andersen, and the left-back fired a low drive past Vicente Guaita.
John McGinn curled in an 86th minute second for Villa after being found on the edge of the box by Anwar Al Ghazi.
Marc Guehi cut the deficit in the fifth of six minutes of stoppage time, prodding in Cheikhou Kouyate’s right-wing cross.
“I’m really disappointed with the result but I’m more disappointed with the performance,” said Palace manager Vieira. “We didn’t play well enough, we didn’t move the ball quickly enough or defend well enough as a team. The consequence of that is not getting anything from the game.
“Yes, there is a lot of frustration again by the way we concede the first goal.
“We made it too comfortable for them, especially in the first half. We didn’t have a good performance, in and out of possession.”
Vieira was asked about substituting Wilfried Zaha and Luka Milivojevic in the second period. He responded: “They both had a yellow card, that was one of the reasons.”
