‘Devastating’ – Johnnie Jackson hails attacking play as Dons put five past Colchester

Johnnie Jackson hailed AFC Wimbledon’s attacking play as “devastating” after their 5-3 win over League Two strugglers Colchester United on Friday night.

Josh Davison gave the Dons the lead after four minutes when Ali Al-Hamadi cut down the right-hand side and pulled the ball back inside the area for the former Charlton forward to finish past Crystal Palace loanee Owen Goodman.

The visitors quickly equalised when the ball fell to Cameron McGeehan inside the area after Alex Bass saved.

Joe Taylor then put Colchester 2-1 up when he was played behind the Dons defence to finish beyond Sunderland loanee Bass.

But Joe Lewis equalised before half-time when he escaped his marker inside the area to meet Jake Reeves’ corner and head beyond Goodman.

Davison grabbed his brace in the 52nd minute when he plucked the ball out of the sky inside the penalty area and squeezed a shot into the net.

Al-Hamadi got his name on the scoresheet quickly after when he was played through by Armani Little to put the Dons 4-2 up.

McGeehan was sent off by referee Ben Atkinson in the 89th minute for dissent after Colchester appealed for a penalty.

Joe Lewis recorded his brace in added time but Colchester found their third in the 94th minute through Tom Dallison.

The Dons lost 1-0 at home to Sutton on Boxing Day.

“I thought it was a really good performance,” said Jackson.

“We should have scored a lot more goals. Our attacking play was devasting at times – it was chance after chance in the second half.

“Scoring five is always good, but being greedy, we probably should have put a bigger attacking gulf between us and them.

“I asked for a response after Sutton and I knew I would get it.

“They’re a good group of lads and they were as disappointed as anyone about that game.

“We couldn’t wallow or feel sorry for ourselves. We didn’t have long and that was the beauty of it – we had a chance to put it right three days later.

“We looked like a completely different team.”
