Exclusive: Former West Ham and Burnley defender looking to win deal at Charlton Athletic

BY RICHARD CAWLEY

Experienced right-back Tyrone Mears is set to train with Charlton Athletic this week as he aims to win a contract.

The 36-year-old – who has played for West Ham United, Derby County, Burnley, Bolton as well as two clubs in the United States – is a free agent after leaving West Bromwich Albion in June.

Addicks manager Lee Bowyer had talked about delving into the free agent market to cover the sale of Anfernee Dijksteel to Middlesbrough last week.

“I played with Tyrone at West Ham and he will train with us for a week,” Bowyer told the South London Press. “We will just look at him fitness-wise. He is a fit lad anyway and still quick – he was rapid when I played with him.

“He can’t be far off it.”
