‘Food for thought’ – Dons boss explains goalkeeper decision for Tranmere draw

AFC Wimbledon boss Johnnie Jackson said Nathan Broome deserved another opportunity to start – with Nik Tzanev dropping out of the starting line-up for their 1-1 draw with Tranmere on Saturday afternoon.

Tzanev – who has been the regular number one between the posts this season for the Dons – dropped to the bench following last weekend’s 5-1 defeat to Swindon.

The New Zealand stopper has made 39 appearances in League Two this season.

Broome had a run in the side when Tzanev was sidelined through injury.

The 21-year-old made an excellent stop in the second half to deny Josh Hawkes from the edge of the box.

“When he first came into the team, he did well,” the Dons boss said of the former Stoke keeper.

“He gave me food for thought about who I select.

“We went with Tzanev for the Stevenage game – there were reasons behind that.

“But I felt as though he deserved another opportunity. He did well today.

“He brings you a calmness and assurance in possession. His kicking is excellent – he’s able to put the ball in areas where you can be really effective.

“He’s made some really good saves. The fundamentals of goalkeeping are the saves you make and how you command your box – he did that really well today.

“He can be pleased with his work this afternoon.”
