Former Charlton coach Anthony Hayes takes on Sunderland role

Former Charlton Athletic coach Anthony Hayes has joined Sunderland until the end of the season.

The Black Cats sacked Michael Beale earlier this week with Mike Dodds placed in charge as interim head coach.

Hayes, who left Charlton Athletic in October, will be a first-team coach at the Stadium Of Light and work alongside Michael Proctor and Alessandro Barcherini.

The Irishman had seven years with the Addicks and progressed from their coaching set-up to senior level, initially working with Ben Garner and then staying in the role following the appointment of Dean Holden.

After Holden’s exit in August, Hayes and Danny Senda both also eventually followed out of the Valley exit door.

Dodds told Sunderland’s official website: “I’ve known Anthony for some time and we are delighted to welcome him to our coaching team.

“This is a position we wanted to add and following the changes made earlier this week, our requirements shifted a little as did the timeframe.

“Anthony immediately made himself available and like Graeme Murty, he will bring added value to our coaching and match preparations. He’s also been an interim head coach before, which will not only support me but also our players as we adapt and move forward together in the coming weeks and months.”
