Former Charlton youngster makes Championship loan switch

Ex-Charlton academy player Jeremy Sarmiento has joined high-flying Championship side Ipswich Town on loan from Premier League side Brighton.

The 20-year-old winger was part of Charlton’s academy – joining in 2009 – before signing for Benfica in 2018.

Sarmiento joined Brighton in July 2021 and made his Premier League debut against Leeds in November 2021.

He made his World Cup debut for Ecuador in the Qatar 2022 World Cup, featuring in all three of their Group A clashes.

The winger spent the start of this season on loan at West Brom before being recalled at the start of this January window and being immediately sent to Portman Road for the rest of the campaign.

Ipswich are second in the table but winless in five.

“I’m very excited to be joining Ipswich at a time when they have been on a great run since winning promotion to the Championship,” he told Ipswich’s website.

“Ipswich were always there after interest in the summer, which didn’t quite work out, but I’m here now, and I’m ready to do my best.

“It’s happened quickly and smoothly and I’ve enjoyed my conversations with the manager, which made it clear this is where I should play, so I’m excited to try and show him what I can do and earn minutes in a team which plays a style I think will suit me.

“I am a direct player and like to get the fans on their feet with a bit of flair, which is a big side to my game, and I can’t wait to get started.”
