Furious Charlton boss Lee Bowyer explains why substitute Jonny Williams was hooked just 23 minutes after coming on during draw at Shrewsbury

Charlton manager Lee Bowyer displayed his ruthless side once again as he withdrew Jonny Williams during the draw at Shrewsbury Town – just 23 minutes after bringing him on as a substitute.

The Addicks boss hauled Omar Bogle off just 34 minutes into the defeat at Burton Albion a couple of weeks ago, saying the striker hadn’t been doing what was asked of him and now he repeated the trick after hooking Williams for pulling out of a challenge.

The Welsh international came on to replace Alex Gilbey on 62 minutes at the New Meadow but was then replaced himself by Adam Matthews with five minutes left to play.

The South Londoners had gone 1-0 up through Ben Watson shortly after Williams entered the fray, but couldn’t hang on for victory as Oliver Norburn scored an added-time penalty for the hosts.

When asked why Williams was withdrawn, Bowyer explained: “Because he pulled out of a tackle and they should have scored from it. If you’re going to pull out of tackles then that is not acceptable. Not playing for me. If you want to pull out of tackles, you ain’t ever going to play for me.

“I’ve just spoke to Jonny in there, I told him what I think of it. I told him the reason why I brought him off. You can’t be doing that. We’re all in this. You have to fight for everything. If you think you can just jump out of the way, jump out of tackles, that is never going to happen.

“I’m fuming. Putting on players and they’re pulling out of tackles. They should have scored before that because someone pulled out of a tackle. It’s not good enough. What are you doing? I won’t accept anything like that, never, and they know that.”
