‘He would have allowed the goal’ – Crystal Palace boss quizzed on late Mateta decision in Wolves draw
Oliver Glasner said it was a 50-50 decision to rule out Jean-Philippe Mateta’s late winner in Crystal Palace’s 2-2 draw at Wolves on Saturday.
The Eagles all three points in added time when Daniel Munoz challenged Jose Sa, and the Portuguese keeper spilt the ball into the path of Mateta.
Frenchman Mateta rolled the ball into the back of the net, but referee Anthony Taylor ruled the goal out for a foul on Sa.
“It’s a 50-50 decision,” said Glasner.
“If he [the referee] blows for a foul, then the referee can’t overrule it.
“How he whistled for the other 98 minutes, there were 30 duals where he didn’t blow for a foul.
“If he had judged the situation the way he did the 98 minutes before, he would have allowed the goal.
“It’s the same. The VAR could not have intervened. Although I thought we were unlucky, what was more disappointing was that the VAR didn’t intervene with the handball from Craig Dawson.
“Ismaila Sarr was one-on-one with the goalkeeper, so it was a clear red card for me. The VAR has to intervene in the situation.
“Many asked if we could score with Eze and many players missing, the team showed the right answer.
“It was time for others to step up, and we had two defenders scoring from set plays and we also created a lot of chances.
“I think a point is okay overall.”
