Herne Hill Harriers’ Katie Snowden makes GB team for European Indoor Championships

BY GEOFF JERWOOD

Katie Snowden has been named in the Great Britain team for the European Indoor Championships in Poland.

The Herne Hill Harriers athlete made it two second-place finishes in successive weekends in the 1,500m at Sportcity in Manchester.

But on the latest occasion it was the British Athletics European Indoor Selection Trials meeting, one of three events held at different venues as a lower-key replacement for the cancelled British Championship.

Balham-raised Snowden will represent GB in Torun, Poland between March 4-7.

She finished even closer behind Holly Archer than the previous weekend as her rival just got ahead in the final few strides of an exciting race.

The early pace was not quick until Snowden took control after 800m and quickly stretched the field of six athletes. This left just three in contention at the bell with 200m remaining – 800m specialist Ellie Baker briefly went ahead before Snowden reclaimed the lead, only for Archer to produce the strongest finish for the win on the line.

The winning time of 4:13.02 was just 0.02 seconds outside the qualifying standard, with Snowden clocking 4:13.16. With both Archer and Snowden having run almost three seconds faster in their previous encounter this was sufficient to see both athletes selected for Team GB.

Snowden can look forward to her first major international outing since she raced for England in the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast in Australia.
