‘He’s found a home’ – Charlton Athletic boss pleased with former West Ham man’s displays

Nathan Jones has talked about Conor Coventry finding “a home” at Charlton Athletic.

The former West Ham United midfielder, who signed for the Addicks in the January transfer window, is facing fresh competition for his spot after the loan signing of Allan Campbell from Luton Town earlier this week.

But Coventry and Greg Docherty have been the chosen pairing in the middle of the park as Charlton have kicked off with three straight League One wins – Luke Berry playing the more advanced role.

The South London Press asked Jones about Coventry’s influence after Saturday’s 2-0 victory over Bolton.

The Welshman said: “He was excellent for me last year, bar the first game probably. He has done fantastically well and I really like him – he wants to learn.

“He’s found a home now. The thing with Conor is that he was really well-thought of at West Ham and had a load of loan moves – but you never find a home. Now he has found a home and I think he’s playing some of his best football.”

Charlton will look to make it four straight victories in the league when they head to Reading on Saturday.

So is it about fuelling confidence in the ranks or trying to keep players grounded?

“We can get better and we will get better,” said Jones. “Yeah, we have a structure where if you don’t concede we have a really good chance of winning the game. If you don’t concede then you’re not going to lose.

“We’re evolving. Now considering in February where we were – 19th – and only lost two in 16 games, or whatever it was, we’ve shown we’ve put something in place.

“Somehow we always made an error and conceded, so we drew a lot of games 1-1. I’m thinking Northampton – when we should’ve been out of sight. But because of that lack of concentration (they did not win). We played Shrewsbury and Wigan here, where we concede two in two minutes from lack of concentration.

“That is what we’ve got to make sure we eradicate because we believe we’ve got people who can score goals. It’s about sticking to process and continuing – because there are some good sides in this league.”
