‘His pedigree is very good’ – Millwall complete loan transfer window deal for Liverpool full-back Calum Scanlon

Millwall have signed Liverpool defender Calum Scanlon on a season-long loan.

Our website reported first that the England U19 international, who signed a new contract with the Reds in April, was set to boost the South London club’s defensive options.

Scanlon completed his medical this morning.

The former Birmingham City youngster, who joined the Liverpool academy at the age of 16,

“Joe has been excellent in the three league games. He’s been very, very good. I’m very pleased with Joe – but we have to be mindful to the fact that it is a long Championship season and we do go through spells in between international breaks, and certainly around Christmas and New Year where there is a lot of football being played.

“It is a big ask for the modern-day full-back to go game after game.

“We look at the full-back positions and Ryan and Joe have started the first three games and done exceptionally well.

“Danny McNamara has played the two cup games and probably been the standout player in those two games. He has done exceptionally well and is a very, very good player for us – he can play off either side.

“But Calum adds some pace and forward-thinking full-back play.

“His pedigree is very good, coming through at Liverpool and the England pathway. Great energy to get up and down. He’s a good one-v-one defender and he carries the ball well – gets you up the pitch quickly. Calum gives us variety and something different to the three full-backs we have already.”
