‘I don’t want to be fined’ – Patrick Vieira refuses to comment on referee’s performance after Crystal Palace’s defeat at Manchester United

Patrick Vieira did not want to talk about Andre Marriner’s performance in Crystal Palace’s 2-1 defeat at Manchester United as he did not want to pick up a fine for his comments.

Erik ten Hag’s side were awarded a penalty in the seventh minute when a cross from Marcus Rashford hit Will Hughes’ hand.

Bruno Fernandes duly sent Vicente Guaita the wrong way from the spot and opened the scoring.

Rashford doubled United’s lead midway through the second half when he tapped home Alejandro Garnacho’s low cross into the penalty area.

Brazilian midfielder Casemiro was sent off eight minutes later after a var check for wrapping his hands around Will Hughes’ throat after the two sides clashed over Jeffrey Schlupp’s challenge on Anthony.

“I don’t want to get involved with that because I don’t want to be fine or suspended,” said Vieira of Andre Marriner’s performance.

“I will wait for the next question.”

Palace pulled one back in the 76th minute after Schlupp redirected Cheick Doucoure’s effort back towards goal.

But the Eagles were unable to find the equaliser and headed back to South London with a point.

“We’re frustrated with the way we started the game,” admitted Vieira.

“We conceded the penalty, and then we managed to get into the game – we were getting involved.

“We finished that game with a couple of situations where we could have got that second goal.

“There were a lot of positions to take from the game. We showed character, and I was really pleased with the character we showed.”

The Eagles are yet to pick up three points in the Premier League in 2023.

“We have to take our chances and score goals. We created situations and chances, but we have to be more ruthless in front of goal.

“But we are creating those situations and chances, so we have to keep being demanding. We will turn things around.”
