Ice-hockey: Streatham add second trophy of the season after Southern Cup win over Slough Jets

Streatham added the Southern Cup to the NIHL 1 South title after a 3-1 aggregate win over Slough Jets at the weekend, writes Christopher Beal.

The South Londoners won 2-1 on the road on Saturday night, responding after Seb Mohr had put Jets ahead in the 11th minute.

Ben Ealey-Newman levelled on 24 minutes.

He buried the rebound following JJ Pitchley’s forward charge and shot.

Streatham went in front 44 seconds into the third period. Jared Lane and Tomasz Skokan set up Ziggy Beesley to finish.

RedHawks welcomed back fans’ favourite and former player-coach Michael Farn as injury cover.

Streatham produced a defensive masterclass at the High Road on Sunday with both sides trading chances throughout – Streatham netminder Danny Milton and Slough’s Brett Massey stopped everything in their path.

It took until the 58th minute for the deadlock to be broken.

Jets head coach Lukas Smital opted to pull netminder Massey for an extra attacker, leaving their net empty.

Farn slipped a pass to Tomasz Skokan, whose long-range effort sealed the tie.

Captain Ryan Watt collected the trophy from EIHA representative Steve Merry.

Farn, right, was pleased to have contributed. He said: “The boys have been short with injuries and suspensions so it was great to have three full lines.

“The boys gave everything and winning like that’s much better when it’s a close game. Hopefully it’s two trophies down and three to go. If I can come in and play a few more games then we’ll see what happens.

“This team is more than capable of winning more.”

Milton was relieved the 2 games were over and the RedHawks had come out on top.

He said: “I was a bit nervous, like everyone in the stands. I think I looked up with three minutes to go and hoped the time would go fast. But I’m glad we’ve got the job done and another trophy in the bag.”

Streatham now set their sights on a chance at a treble when they face Oxford at home on Sunday in the final of the Britton Cup (6.45pm).
