Ipswich loan target Tom Elliott set to be part of Millwall’s EFL Cup squad

BY RICHARD CAWLEY

Tom Elliott is set to be part of Millwall’s squad for their EFL Cup tie at Oxford United tonight.

The striker has been out with a hamstring strain he suffered in the opening pre-season friendly at Concord Rangers.

Elliott played for the Lions’ U23 side at Leeds United last week. Ipswich are one of the clubs interested in taking the former AFC Wimbledon man on loan before next week’s deadline.

“Tom is going to be in the squad Tuesday night at Oxford,” said Millwall boss Neil Harris. “He needs some match minutes as he is still playing catch up – he’s still in pre-season mode.”

The Lions chief will make changes for the fixture at the Kassam Stadium.

Jon Dadi Bodvarsson, Jayson Molumby, Luke Steele, Jason McCarthy and Shaun Hutchinson started in the previous round as they won 2-1 at West Brom.

“A lot of boys might struggle to go again after three games last week and we have to be respectful to their bodies,” said Harris. “It is the same as West Brom away – I want to be competitive, try to win the game and get through to the next round. However, our real focus becomes Hull City [on Saturday] for us.

“It is about making sure we are fresh and ready for that one. But I’m looking forward to Oxford, it will be an experienced side that goes there and plays.

“There are not a million miles between the two clubs in terms of leagues and we know that Oxford will enjoy being the underdogs.

“We need to be focused from the first minute – be at it – and give ourselves a good opportunity to get through.”
