‘It’s my responsibility to sort it’ – Charlton boss Ben Garner frustrated at not finishing off Forest Green Rovers

Ben Garner says it is his responsibility to get to the bottom of why Charlton have been unable to build on positive starts to their League One matches.

The Addicks drew 1-1 with Forest Green Rovers on Tuesday night.

Corey Blackett-Taylor had fired the Addicks ahead inside the opening 10 minutes but the visitors levelled on the stroke of half-time, Connor Wickham presented with a simple tap in after keeper Joe Wollacott had failed to deal adequately with a cross.

“We’re disapponted with the result, it was a frustrating evening,” said Garner. “We started well, scored a fantastic goal and were really in the ascendency. We need to be more ruthless in getting that second – they were on the ropes at that stage.

“Then we got a little bit loose and made too many mistakes, we dropped our levels and allowed them a bit of hope in the game – culminating in their equalising goal.

“We’ve created enough opportunities to score three or four goals tonight. We have to be more clinical, that’s for certain. Frustrating, we gave them something to hold on to and they can kill the game and waste time – it becomes tough to keep momentum and tempo in the game

“We need to take more opportunities than we are. We’re creating enough to score more goals. We need to put the ball in the back of the net more often.

“I need to understand why we drop away from what we’ve been doing. Whether we get too comfortable or start doing things differently from what we’d set up to do, I don’t know. I need to find a way of improving that. Again, it is my responsibility to do because we started well, we get the goal and are ahead – a second goal would have put us really in control. Even then they didn’t look like scoring, although we hadn’t got that second goal, at no point did I feel they were going to score.

“We allowed them to get a bit of hope and we gifted them a goal. That makes the second half a different game.”
