Charlton manager heaps praise on Corey Blackett-Taylor for display at Doncaster – and reveals details of his bizarre late booking

Johnnie Jackson lauded wing-back Corey Blackett-Taylor after his fine display during Charlton’s 1-0 win at Doncaster Rovers.

The former Tranmere Rovers man was a handful all afternoon and it was his marauding run into the area and ball inside that laid the winning goal on a plate for Jayden Stockley during the second period.

He also coaxed Kyle Knoyle into a foul inside the penalty area during the first-half – although Conor Washington went on to see his spot-kick saved.

“He’s very difficult to defend against,” said Jackson. “He’s in great form, he’s enjoying his football, enjoying the role. We try and provide and play a way that gets people like that on the ball, which we did really well. I was really pleased with how we got him the football today.

“Then it’s down to him. He’s playing wing-back but he’s a winger, isn’t he? That’s how we use him. He gave them an incredibly tough time. They made a change at half-time because he was causing so much havoc.”

The 24-year-old was involved in a bizarre incident late on after going down with injury. He left the field of play and appeared to be given permission to go back on by the fourth official – only to receive the ball almost immediately from a loose pass when clean through. The referee decided to halt play and then show the Charlton man a yellow card.

Jackson explained: “I’m just glad I can speak about it calmly because it hasn’t cost us. I was trying to make a sub, bring him off and bring [Akin] Famewo on – we told the fourth official that was what we wanted to do. We then had to defend a set-piece with 10 men which we shouldn’t have had to do.

“Then the fourth official sent him on, admittedly at a terrible moment, he should never have sent him on. But he told him to go on so it’s not the lad’s fault. He nicks it and would have been clean through, which would have been a bit of a scandal. But why he’s getting booked for that, it’s the fourth official’s error. The lad shouldn’t get booked for that.

“He had a bit of cramp at the end but that was in the 90 plus minutes. It’s good that he’s back, free from injury but he’s able to put those 90-minute games in as well as that’s something he’s not been able to do. He’s getting better, physically and what he’s bringing to the party in terms of his play is excellent.”
