Key Surrey duo sign new deals
Rory Burns and Ollie Pope have signed new contracts at Surrey until the end of the 2023 season.
The pair are both academy products who have emerged as key first teamers for the South Londoners.
Burns made his debut in April 2012. Pope debuted for Surrey in 2016.
The duo have flown out to South Africa for a four-match Test series which starts on Boxing Day.
Sam Curran has also made the England travelling party.
Since Burns succeeded Gareth Batty as Surrey captain he has scored the most Division One runs and led from the front when the club won the County Championship title in 2018.
Burns went past the 10,000-run barrier last season.
Pope had only played 15 times for Surrey before he received his first England call up.
He has 3,124 runs for the club – an average of 71.31.
The two Currans – Sam and Tom – and Jason Roy have been named in both England’s white-ball squads for their tour of South Africa in February.
Roy was a regular for his country as they won the ICC Men’s World Cup in July.
This will be their first action in the 50-over format since that triumph.
Will Jacks and Amar Virdi are part of the England Lions tour in Australia which runs from January 21-February 13.
National selector Ed Smith said: “We’ve selected two exciting squads for our Lions’ tour of Australia, where the aim is not only to win matches but to prepare players for international cricket.
“With this tour we’ve got England’s short-term needs in mind, with the upcoming tour of Sri Lanka and a busy summer schedule, as well as an opportunity to provide players with relevant experience for future Ashes series.”
