Liverpool loanee impresses Millwall boss as he makes Championship playing return
Millwall head coach Alex Neil was totally happy with the performance of Liverpool loanee Calum Scanlon in today’s 1-0 defeat to Hull City.
The Liverpool left-back was signed on loan at the end of the summer transfer window to provide cover and a rotation option to manage Joe Bryan’s minutes.
But Bryan started on the left of a back three against the Tigers with Scanlon in the wider role.
A back issue had prevented Scanlon from playing and his outing today ended four months without first-team action.
“He was excellent,” said Neil. ” What you can see is that he is athletic, he is technical and he can handle the ball.
“The game, probably at the start, was a little bit quick for him, in terms of getting his head up and maybe feeding a couple down the side.
“But there is loads and loads to work with. Calum is exactly the type of player that we want at the club.
“He was good. Once it reached 60 minutes I literally can’t afford any more injuries at the moment, so I need to try and protect him. Duncan (Watmore) has not done a lot and only been on the grass a little bit. Macca (Langstaff) has only been on the grass for a day. Realistically some of the lads I’ve put out today I wouldn’t have put on the pitch but we are that stretched at the moment we don’t have many alternatives.”
