Manchester United’s Sancho and former Charlton Athletic talents Gomez and Lookman to feature in new docuseries focusing on South London football

A new three-part docuseries – exploring the thriving football talent pool in South London – will be televised later this month.

Jadon Sancho, Eberechi Eze, Joe Gomez, Tammy Abraham, Aaron Wan Bissaka, Ademola Lookman and Michail Antonio are just some of the players who have gone on to play at the highest level.

Camberwell-born Sancho, who was raised in Kennington, is one of the contributors in South Of The River, with Peckham’s Rio Ferdinand an executive producer.

England international Sancho dazzled for Borussia Dortmund before a £73million transfer to Manchester United in July.

He is set to share his experiences about his journey from South London into the world of European professional football.

Ferdinand, now a pundit, joined Leeds United for £18m in 2000 – then a British transfer record that also made him the world’s most expensive defender.

He went on to have 12 seasons at Manchester United – winning the Champions League and  six Premier League titles – as well as 81 caps for the Three Lions.

“It’s great that the area of London I grew up in is getting the recognition it deserves – it’s a talent factory like no other,” said Ferdinand. “You’ll hear from me and many others who, against the odds, have been lucky enough to represent South London in the biggest clubs and international competitions in the world.

“South Of The River shines a light on what makes the place so special and the obstacles that need to be overcome, while showcasing the next generation who are daring to dream by following in our footsteps. I’m proud to be from South Of The River.”

Former Tooting & Mitcham winger Antonio became West Ham’s top scorer in the Premier League in August.

Wan Bissaka became the most costly full-back in history with his 2019 switch to Manchester United exceeding £50m.

Gomez, an outstanding talent who broke into Charlton’s first-team at the age of 17, was a bargain £3.5m capture by Liverpool in the summer of 2015. The Catford-raised centre-back has won both the Premier League and Champions League with the Merseysiders – plus the European Championship with England U17s.

Lookman was plucked from Sunday league football by the Addicks and has gone on to play for Everton, RB Leipzig, Fulham and Leicester City.

Camberwell-born Abraham, 24, came through the youth ranks at Chelsea and is another Champions League winner. Roma reportedly paid £34m for him in August.

Eze, who grew up in Greenwich, bounced back from being released by Millwall in 2016 to become one of the outstanding offensive talents in the Championship.

His displays for QPR led to Crystal Palace splashing in the region of £17m in August 2020.

The first episode of South Of The River will be on BT Sport 1 at 10.15pm on November 23. BT Sport 3 will show the next two episodes on November 24 and 25 (10.30pm).
