“Maybe we should re-sign him!” – Millwall boss Rowett on their former keeper Luke Steele playing as a striker in Sunday league

Millwall manager Gary Rowett has joked about re-signing Luke Steele – with the goalkeeper now playing Sunday League football as a striker.

The 36-year-old spent last season on loan with the Lions but is now a free agent after leaving Forest.

And Steele recently told a podcast he had been tempted to turn out for a local side, rattling in the goals. He also revealed he had not pulled on a pair of gloves since Millwall’s 2019-20 season finished.

He provided back-up to Bart Bialkowski with Frank Fielding sidelined for nearly the entire campaign due to a couple of injury setback.

“Steeley is a brilliant character,” said Rowett. “He’s got a few business interests outside of football.

“If he is scoring goals then putting two and two together we might be able to bring him back in a different job!

“It is just a good example of someone who loves his football. It also shows it is a tough world out there for any player out of contract now, coming up for the next few years – particularly with the wage cap in League One.

“I hope he gets fixed up in the not-too-distant future. He did a brilliant, brilliant job for us.

“It’s great he is enjoying his football. Even pulling on the number nine shirt for a Sunday league side you have still got to have the appetite for it.”
