Miles Leaburn set goal target after Charlton striker scores eighth of season in win at Morecambe

Miles Leaburn has been set a target of scoring at least double figures for Charlton Athletic this season.

That is the challenge from Addicks boss Dean Holden after he watched the teenage striker collect his eighth goal of the campaign in Tuesday’s 4-1 win at Morecambe.

This is Leaburn’s first season in men’s football and injuries have slightly disrupted his campaign.

But already the former Chelsea youngster has an impressive haul of goals for the League One club.

His midweek volley was his first goal since the end of December.

“He’s adapted excellently, from the level he was playing at previously to coming into men’s football at such a young age.

“He took his goal excellently the other night, not just the finish but the calmness to take it on his chest – more than that, the awareness of the space around him to swivel. It’s a brilliant volley.

“He’s been in and out of the team due to the niggles he has picked up. Sometimes that’s the way with young players coming in. We’ve had to be really careful how we’ve managed him.

“That can be frustrating because sometimes you might want to put him in the team more than you’ve been able to. But you’ve got to think about Miles, the age that he is at, and it’s not just about the next game in front of you as a young player. You have to listen to the people around and see how much exposure you can give them.

“He was really pleased with his goal the other night. He’s got to get to double figures now, that’s got to be the minimum target for him.

“Miles is a natural finisher. He’s one of the best finishers at the club. He can score off his left foot and his right foot. He’s brilliant in the air. The first two goals he scored when I came in, Peterborough at home and the one at Oxford. He’s a scorer of good goals but he’s also there for the tap-ins.

“He’s got a lot of work to do. We’re working hard on his movement and timing of his movement. Certainly his finishing is of a very good standard.”
