Millwall aim to do goalkeeper loan deal before transfer window closes – with Frank Fielding undergoing surgery

BY RICHARD CAWLEY

Millwall are looking to sign a goalkeeper before tomorrow night’s transfer deadline – with Frank Fielding’s season effectively over following arm surgery.

The Lions have no experienced back-up to first choice Bartosz Bialkowski.

Fielding damaged his bicep muscle in training, not long after returning from a quad injury which had kept him out since the opening day of the Championship season.

Millwall brought in Luke Steele to cover Fielding’s original absence but he returned to Nottingham Forest earlier this month.

“We’re trying to do something inside the window but if we don’t at least we know we’re not tied to the window on it,” said Lions manager Gary Rowett. “But of course we’d like to do something inside the window and have two senior keepers in the building – not only as competition for places but also to give good back up should the worst happen.

“If it happens outside of the window then we’ll only be able to act on free transfers or act if something happens to Bart.

“I’m not quite sure on the exact prognosis for Frankie but it’s between three to four months. It’s not ideal to ever have surgery and particular arm surgery for a goalkeeper.

“It is rotten luck for Frankie again. It’s difficult for the club and also is very tough for him. We’ll just try to find a solution which helps him get back to fitness but it is not going to be a short road back, that’s for sure.”
