Millwall boss reacts to EFL Cup draw – as Lions could face Premier League opposition in round three
Gary Rowett has given his verdict on Millwall’s EFL Cup draw – which could see them face a Premier League side in the third round.
The Lions won their opening game of the 2020-21 campaign in that competition with a 3-1 victory at Crawley Town on Saturday.
And Millwall will face League Two side Cheltenham Town next midweek at The Den. The winner will face either Sheffield United or Burnley in the following round.
The draw was done differently this season as former Lions defender Phil Babb drew both the second and third round ties yesterday afternoon.
“It’s a strange way of doing it but what it does allow you to do is start thinking about travel and your logistics – which is probably the thinking behind it from the league,” said Rowett.
“We’ll never be complacent but it [Cheltenham] is the type of game that gives us an opportunity, if we do things right, of a Premier League side in the next round.
“They are great games for maintaining the fitness of the squad and also helping players coming back from injury or to give someone the opportunity to get some minutes as well.
“We’ll see if we can progress. It’s about trying to create a mentality and culture where we want to try and be the best all the time. I felt we showed a little bit on Saturday and hopefully we’ve got a chance to show that again in the first game.”
