Millwall goal hero Jed Wallace: I had to prise free-kick off Connor Mahoney – it’s lovely to reward fans

BY RICHARD CAWLEY

Jed Wallace revealed he had to talk Connor Mahoney into letting him take the match-winning free-kick for Millwall on Saturday.

The attacker sent a curling effort into the top right corner of the net to seal a 1-0 success at Swansea – the Lions’ first three points on the road this season.

“I’m buzzing,” said Wallace. “We had one [a free-kick] just before that had the same feel to it – this one was a bit closer.

“It took some persuading to get Connor’s nice left foot away from it, I managed to sneak it off him and I’m delighted it went in.

“It’s nice to reward the away fans, who haven’t had the excitement they should have had over the last two or three years. We’re hoping to give the away support more to cheer about.

“Pearcey [Alex Pearce] came back into the team and he’s got fantastic leadership skills. We had a lot of experience in the squad and that showed.

“Myself, Connor and Mahlon [Romeo] brought that energy and the subs made a real impact – that has been a real feature since the manager has come in. They did that again.

“It was a great win and we thoroughly deserved it, playing against a good possession team.

“We should have got two or three [goals], but we’ll take a 1-0 every day of the week.”
