Millwall manager Rowett cites versatility and character as key in deal for former Rotherham defender

Millwall manager Gary Rowett has admitted that Wes Harding’s versatility – coupled with his character – were key in the South London club signing the former Rotherham United defender.

The 26-year-old turned down new terms with the Millers and is a free agent.

The Lions confirmed the addition of Harding this afternoon.

“You have different reasons for signing different players – every player has their qualities,” Rowett told the South London Press. “Wes has got a lot of qualities which have shown in the Championship.

“He is a very, very strong defender and he’s got good athleticism. He’s a player I know. He’s a really good character – a bit of a voice, a talker and an organiser. He has got a real desire to win.

“He’ll bring different qualities on the ball. He can play, more or less, all the way across the back five. I think he did for Rotherham, hence why he played 40 odd games this season.

“There is an element of his versatility and character being a massive factor. He will fit into the group really well. At 26, he has got a really good base in the Championship and try to kick on – to be like a Muzza, Hutchy or Coops, who have been here a long time and actually add so much value to the group and squad.

“Wes is that type of player.

“I had him when he was a younger player at Birmingham. He will give you 100 per cent every single game. He gets into the final third and has got good crossing quality off both feet. He’s a combative defender. He doesn’t want to get beat or lose one-v-ones and battles.

“He’ll give us different qualities, which is what you’re looking for in signings.”
