Millwall midfielder set to be out until September with injury sustained at Gillingham
George Honeyman will miss the start of the season with the injury he suffered in Millwall’s friendly win at Gillingham.
The former Hull City and Sunderland midfielder suffered a grade three quad tear in Saturday’s match and could be sidelined until the end of September.
Honeyman started at right wing-back against the Gills but needed treatment in the Lions’ penalty box before being replaced by Danny McNamara.
“It is really disappointing news for us and for George,” Millwall manager Gary Rowett told the South London Press. “George has got bags of energy and we missed him an awful lot when he wasn’t available last season – in terms of his drive, determination and experience.
“He is one of the characters who drives the team on. He does so much work off the ball. He’s a leader and a really good player.”
Honeyman, 28, made 40 appearances in all competitions for Millwall last season, 38 of those in the Championship.
