Minor illness forces Charlton Athletic keeper to head home from Marbella training camp

Ashley Maynard-Brewer has been sent home from Charlton Athletic’s training camp due to a minor illness.

The Australian goalkeeper is likely to be back in training next week.

Maynard-Brewer and Harry Isted, signed on a free transfer from Luton Town recently, have split the game time between them in the first two pre-season friendlies against Welling United and Dartford Town.

Maynard-Brewer, 24, ended last season as first choice after impressing manager Dean Holden.

The Addicks allowed Joe Wollacott to make a permanent exit earlier this summer, with the Ghana international penning a deal with Hibernian.

Charlton are out in Malaga for six days of warm weather training and will play a friendly against Leyton Orient on Friday. The match, which will be streamed on Charlton TV, is also open to supporters.

Holden has invited fans to an open training session today at Marbella Football Center today.

“The players and staff are really excited to meet the fans,” Holden told the South London Press. “There are all different types – families, individuals, young and old.

“We will spend some time with them afterwards, just chatting with them and answering any questions.

“It’s great. Some are using it as part of their summer holiday and others as a weekend trip.

“I’ve said it multiple times, the more we can keep connecting with the fans the better. It’s great for them to see how we’re working behind the scenes because as much as we put content out on social media, they get to walk up on a matchday and then the game – that’s it.

“It’s great they can come and watch us training. I’m sure they’ve got a lot of questions about the processes behind training and matches. I’m happy to chat with them. I’m looking forward to it as well.”
