Nathan Jones backs Tyreece Campbell to bounce back from EFL Cup penalty miss
Nathan Jones has backed Tyreece Campbell to learn from his penalty miss against Birmingham City in the EFL Cup.
The 20-year-old academy graduate won the spot-kick himself when he was fouled by Tyler Roberts but was unable to beat Ryan Allsop from 12 yards. The Blues went on to win the tie 1-0 thanks to a wonder strike from Brandon Khela.
Charlton manager Jones has looked to convert Campbell from a winger into a forward this season and hopes the Southwark-born attacker will be able to chalk the miss up to experience.
The Addicks boss said: “He wasn’t as disappointed as me, I can promise you that. It’s a learning curve.
“I’m glad it’s happened in the cup and not the league. We took the cup seriously and wanted to have a good cup run but we’ve drawn difficult opposition and narrowly lost. There’s enough in there to say we’re on the right path.
“Yes, as far as I understand, we normally put that down,” added Jones when asked if Campbell was the nominated penalty taker for the evening.
“I would have thought Luke Berry wouldn’t have been far behind. Daniel Kanu. We would have had penalty takers for a penalty or if it had gone to penalties. We had things clear in our mind. He’s just missed a pen.
“The boy is one of the best finishers. One of the most potent athletes. He’ll learn from that. We’re disappointed, but he’s a great kid. He’s done wonderfully and we are converting him into something that we feel we can.”
