‘No issue’ – Johnnie Jackson’s reaction to Josh Davison’s penalty miss in AFC Wimbledon’s 1-1 draw with Crewe

AFC Wimbledon boss Johnnie Jackson couldn’t fault Josh Davison whatsoever for his penalty miss in their 1-1 draw with Crewe on Tuesday evening.

But Jackson did admit that the penalty miss deflated his side’s performance.

The former Charlton Athletic forward, who has bagged five goals this season since his club-record move to Plough Lane, was handed the opportunity to restore Wimbledon’s lead in the 74th minute when Ethan Chislett was brought down inside the area.

Davison stepped up by Crewe goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo guessed the right way and pushed the 22-year-old’s spot-kick away for a corner.

The Dons took the lead through Ayoub Assal but were pegged back midway through the second half after Rio Adebisi reacted quickest and turned Kelvin Mellor’s header back across goal past Nik Tzanev.

“People miss penalties,” said Jackson.

“Josh is a good penalty-taker.

“He’s stepped up tonight. If you’re a penalty taker, you’re going to miss penalties, aren’t you? Harry Kane missed one last week – it happens.

“He had the nerve to stand up and take them. He put one away the other week.

“I have no issues with Josh being our penalty taker. He strikes a good ball – it’s just one of those things.”

Both sides had chances during the game to claim all three points, with Crewe coming close through Dan Agyei late on.

“I’m disappointed not to win,” added Jackson.

“I thought we had done enough to win the game, but we haven’t been ruthless enough in the moments where it had really mattered.

“It’s a point, but we wanted three. We never quite managed that tonight, but I thought we had enough opportunities to put the game to bed.

“I think we had some spells in the second half, but missing the penalty deflated us a little bit. That knocked the stuffing out of us a bit, and we didn’t find our energy and a way to win it after that.

“I thought before that, and in the build-up to that, we looked like we were going to grab one and go on and win it.

“It was a turning point in the game.”
