QPR boss Cifuentes explains tactical changes that inspired Oxford win
Cifuentes started the game at the Kassam Stadium without a recognised ‘number ten’, with Jack Colback, Jonathan Varane and Sam Field all selected in midfield.
All three ended up playing crucial roles as Rangers secured their first league win since Valentines Day.
“First of all we were relying on who we think is in a good moment,” said Cifuentes. “We relied on the capacity of Sam, Jonathan and Jack to have the physicality to win second balls and win duels because we know Oxford have the tendency to play long.
“It was important for us to pick up the second balls from their play and then use the build-up skills that other players like Ronnie [Edwards] and Liam [Morrison] have.
“It was a very good balance. I would say I’m very happy with the performance of those players.”
Another selection surprise was Cifuentes’ decision to field Nicolas Madsen on the left wing. It was the Danish midfielder’s first league start since the reverse fixture against Oxford in December.
However, he took his opportunity well as he assisted Ronnie Edwards opening goal from a corner while also working hard out of possession.
“I’m very happy for him because it’s not easy what he’s been going through especially in the last few weeks and months,” said Cifuentes. “He deserved it and I think that he played at a really high level.
“We spoke with him to do this job because we felt in a game like this to come inside [from the left] and use his quality with the last pass and try to be a bit more central [would be important], despite defensively he was playing a little bit more as a left winger.
“He did really well so I’m very happy for him.”
When asked if Madsen could feature regularly in a wide position, Cifuentes replied: “I always say it depends on who plays around him.
“It depends on the game, it depends on where the space is and where we want to occupy the space based on the defensive organisation of the opposition.
“His goal against Luton in the first half of the season came when he was playing as a left winger, so we’ll see.”
Injury-hit Rangers were dealt further blows against Oxford, with Sam Field taken to hospital after losing consciousness following a blow to the head before Kenneth Paal had to be substituted later in the game.
Cifuentes was more positive about Paul Smyth’s chances of being available for Saturday’s fixture against Bristol City after the winger also appeared to be struggling during the game.
