‘Really unlucky’ – Johnnie Jackson on striker waiting to open AFC Wimbledon account

AFC Wimbledon boss Johnnie Jackson says Josh Kelly was unfortunate not to open his account for the club in Saturday’s 2-0 defeat at home to Newport.

Kelly hit the crossbar in the 61st minute when he looped an effort from the edge of the box over Nick Townsend – but the ball bounced off an over for a goal kick.

The 25-year-old went close again in the 68th minute when he received the ball on the edge of the box and squeezed an effort just beyond the Newport goal.

Kelly was subbed on the 60th minute for Crystal Palace loanee John-Kymani Gordon and has started the previous two games on the bench.

He is still waiting to open his account for the Dons since signing in the Janiuary window from Solihull Moors.

Wimbledon will be without Omar Bugiel for next weekend’s clash at Crewe after being called up on international duty by Lebanon.

“He’s desperate to score and we’re desperate for him to score,” said Jackson.

“He’s getting opportunities, which is good.

“He carves one out of nothing with the lob – he’s really unlucky.

“Also with one that goes just a foot wide of the post.

“It’s coming for him. He’s probably thinking: ‘What have I got to do to score?’

“What he has to do is keep getting into the positions and we have to keep providing him with the opportunities. It will come.”
