Riders from all over UK competed at Peckham BMC track in latest rounds of UK National Series

BMX riders from all over the UK headed for the Peckham Challengers BMX track in Burgess Park last weekend for rounds seven and eight of the UK National Series, writes Mike Woof.

Some of those racing had come from as far away as Scotland and Cornwall to compete.

Star performers on the track included Olympic gold medallist and world champion Beth Shriever and Olympic silver medallist Kye Whyte, not to mention former world champion Dale Holmes, who travelled from California to compete in the 50-plus grand veterans category.

South London was well represented with riders from Brixton, Merton Saints and Peckham Challengers all racing on both days.

Whyte raced on the Saturday in the superclass men category. He crossed the line in first, with Eddie Moore in second and Calum Strickland in third. Local rider and Brixton/Peckham coach Dean Reeves came fourth with Danny Alvarez, another local rider, in seventh.

Brixton BMX Club had a record 15 riders competing amongst the 793 racing on the two days, with a range of male and female racers aged from 7-60. Brixton’s riders were Jawdan Ajaibade, Leon Bickelman, Emile Challenger, Felix Chambers, Oscar Chambers, Anoushka Jones, Zachary Jones, Lillyrose Khemdour Loubere, Jason Lewis, Hunter Malyon, David Radcliffe, Isla Radcliffe, Ezra Thompson, Jacob Twenefour and Mike Woof.

The racing was split into age categories for age and experience and included some tough head to head performances, as well as thrills and spills and close finishes. The event ran extremely smoothly with no delays and luckily, no serious injuries. Praise has to go to the British Cycling and the crew from Peckham Challengers for putting on such a successful event.

And for Brixton’s racers, special praise has to go to eight-year-old Jacob Twenefour, who won the A finals on both days, despite these being his first ever National BMX races.
