R’s boss bewildered by Begovic red card at Leeds United
QPR boss Gareth Ainsworth was left bewildered by Asmir Begovic’s sending off in their 1-0 defeat at Leeds United on Wednesday evening.
The Bosnian keeper, who joined the west Londoners on a free in the summer after he left Everton, was issued with a red card by referee David Webb in second-half stoppage time for bringing down Leeds striker Patrick Bamford on the edge of the box.
Replays showed that ex-Crystal Palace and Chelsea striker Bamford jumped out of the way of Begovic and did not make contact with the stopper.
“I can’t see why Asmir has been sent off for the life of me – he hasn’t even touched Bamford,” Ainsworth told QPR’s YouTube channel.
“I don’t want to go into referees at the minute, but we’re not getting the rub of the green.
“Asmir is devastated. He said: ‘Gaffer, I did not touch the guy’. We watched the video replay and he hasn’t.
“We have had it rough lately. I would kick myself if I didn’t look at appealing that red card for Asmir.”
QPR suffered their second defeat of the week and stayed in the relegation zone with Crysencio Summervile’s strike in the ninth minute deciding the contest.
“What we didn’t do was keep hold of the ball well enough,” added Ainsworth.
“That was our most battling game all season. We have played some great stuff and we’re great on the ball. But on Wednesday the work rate and graft was there and we weren’t good enough on the ball.
“We needed to show a bit more bravery to get them passes in and pop it about like we can. We have taken them all the way .
“It was one sloppy goal that cost us – it has decided the game away at Elland Road.”
