Sunny Edwards: Bam Rodriguez is not scared to face me

Sunny ‘Showtime’ Edwards expects Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez to be up for a unification clash.

Croydon-raised Edwards, 27, retained his IBF world flyweight title on Saturday with a unanimous points decision over Andres Campos.

Edwards’ promoter Eddie Hearn reckons he can get a signed agreement before the end of the month with Texan Rodriguez, who holds the WBO belt.

“I do think Bam will fight me,” Edwards told iFL TV. “He is coming off a broken jaw (in his last bout) – so would he want to come straight off that into a unification? I don’t know. He would have to have time off sparring and training.

“I said to Eddie that I will fight anywhere in the world, if I go to his hometown then all I’d ask is for courtside seats to a basketball game – that’s all I need and then I’ll be there.

“If I don’t get a unification over the line then a mandatory is going to get called for Felix Alvarado again (who he beat in 2022).

“If we can’t get one done in the next few days then it is different weight, world champion. They’ve mentioned (super-flyweight) Roman Gonzalez – that’s sound. I can even make light-flyweight.

“I just want another belt. I’m sick and tired of just having one belt.

“I know he is putting pressure on Bam and the other champions because he knows that I’ve agreed my side for all of these possible fights.”

“I’ve never been a diva when it has come to getting me in the ring – ever. These fights mean more to me than they ever could mean to the company, Matchroom, Eddie Hearn or DAZN because they mean something to my legacy.

“It’s an event for them that they want to put on – to give the fans what they want – but for me it is a lifetime of work, passion and soul going into it.

“I want to know how good I am, genuinely, and I’ll only do that by constantly challenging myself with the biggest and best names out there.

“Bam Rodriguez is the one they are saying, outside of me, who is the man in the division – so I want him. I like Martinez but he is nowhere to be seen.”
