Surrey CCC’s five-wicket win keeps alive hopes of One-Day Cup progression

Surrey’s five-wicket victory over Middlesex at Lord’s keeps alive the Oval outfit’s hopes of moving forward to the knockout phase of the Royal London One-Day Cup.
Their three previous visits to St John’s Wood in the Royal London had all ended in defeat – in the final. But with Ben Foakes (86) and Ollie Pope (57 not out) following up Tom Curran’s 4-33 ball, the South Londoners are still in with a shout of returning to Lord’s on June 30.
However, for that to happen they not only need to beat Glamorgan tomorrow (Wednesday), but will also relying on South Group leaders Hampshire overcoming Somerset at home and Kent – who walloped Surrey by 220 runs last Friday – getting the better of Essex at Chelmsford.

Surrey’s Rikki Clarke said: “The other day was very disappointing against Kent, so it was important for us to bounce back and it was a brilliant bowling performance to keep Middlesex below a par score, then chase it down and the guys got us over the line.
“Nothing changes – we try and win the game against Glamorgan and fingers crossed for results to go our way and you never know, we might sneak in through the back door.”

Surrey County Cricket Club have applied for planning permission for the redevelopment of the Lock and Laker Stands, which, if granted, will increase the capacity of the Kia Oval to 28,000 with addition of 2,500 seats.
As well as the extra match day capacity, the new development will see a new facility constructed for the club’s conference and events business, allowing the ground to host larger events with scope for over 700 guests.
The application was submitted after a lengthy consultation with local residents and Lambeth Council. Surrey’s chief executive Richard Gould said: “Ever since announcing our plan to expand the Oval in order to meet the increasing demand we are encountering for international and domestic cricket, we have been working towards this moment.
“As well as adding 2,500 extra seats to the ground, this development will provide vital new facilities to help the club continue to build on the recent growth that has been driven in our conference and event business.
“I would like to thank the local residents we worked with on the design of the scheme, as well as other club stakeholders for their help and support in the preparation of this application.”
